When it all goes wrong at work

We all respond in different ways when something goes wrong. Even the simplest of things like a minor knockback can weaken a person's self-esteem which will impact their work performance. Other people can deal with issues with little or no effect on their work (hardly fair!). Some crumble, some cope and some thrive under considerable pressure. Things do run smoothly from time to time but there is ALWAYS a rough patch waiting for you around the corner. 

Many people go through work and career problems such as a failed project, dealing with an overbearing boss, dealing with rejection and criticism and problems that you're not in control of. If your working life lacks happiness then you are most likely going to feel negative, blame yourself in most scenarios and also put all of your energy into negative thoughts rather than achieving at work. 

Below I have written a list of the top tips for you to help deal with matters when they go wrong at work! 

--- Blame Yourself Only When You Can Learn Something ---

A lot of people get confused between when to blame yourself and when to take responsibility. Sounds silly, doesn't it? But blame is the act of censuring, making negative statements about yourself or an individual whereas responsibility is being accountable to one's power, control or management. They both sound very similar but being responsible is a good... adult term for understanding that things go wrong for a range of reasons.  It doesn't always mean you are the sole cause of the problem!

You need to make sure you are clear about what has happened. You can potentially learn from a near miss that has light consequences. I like to think of it as 'taking responsibility is about looking to the future and ways to improve.' 

When you think about the times that you have beaten yourself up over a mistake, you need to remember that 'failing forwards' is about looking at the next project or even starting the new day. Everyone reflects back on their mistakes and some people are haunted by them but that is normal; just don't reflect back on them for too long! A good way to use your mistakes would be write down some improvements for yourself just in case the situation was to arise again. I would definitely recommend getting as much training as possible or even talking to a colleague to help you overcome the blame and think more positively. 

--- Take a Break ---

Yup, that's right! Sometimes it can be easier to step away from the situation and let others deal with it. This definitely depends on the situation though, don't just step away when matters need to be dealt with ASAP! Most important decisions require a lot of attention but only on the problem itself. When you're standing in the situation knees deep, you will struggle to come up with the best solution or cause of action for the issue. You will most likely be caught up with everything else around you which might not be part of the problem. I would defiantly take a step back and breathe for a moment to re-evaluate the matter. I promise you, it will help! 

Don't forget to hit life with that right hook once you're out of that messy hell! 

--- Fix The Things You Can, Accept The Things You Can't ---

Basically, no question is a silly question. Simple. If you're stuck and need help, don't hesitate to ask a colleague or your boss for help. Sometimes people get worried about completing all their tasks but I always think of the consequences; the better you perform the more new tasks you will be given. For some people, this is very important if they are stressed out with the amount of workload but don't let it affect your work performance! It just depends on who you are and how you deal with situations. 

Also, you should accept the fact that working a little slower from time to time is OK. The biggest danger in working in an overload state is you can only feel how busy and stressed you are and can't get out of the 'zone'. A lot of successful people tend to slow down and re-think their work. You really don't want to crash land. Just remember to take one thing at a time and don't be afraid to ask for help. 

--- Laugh a Little But Not Too Much ---

We all know that being angry isn't going to fix anything! I think one of the best situations for stressful times is trying to make a light when things go wrong. Here at Company Fusion Limited, if we make a mistake, we have to buy cakes for the whole team to eat throughout the day. It's a light punishment but you get the idea! 

Things will always go wrong while you're at work and sometimes you can't prevent them. Stress is an inevitable part of life and if you are able to control your emotions or even the matter, the stress will get easier to deal with and 

--- I have added a few things to remember when things go wrong ---

  1.  This will pass.
  2.  Some things are going right.
  3.  I have control.
  4.  Don't be afraid to ask for help.
  5.  I can handle this.
  6.  Something good will come out of this.
  7.  Accept what's out of control. 
  8.  I have overcome difficulties in the past.
  9.  Take care of yourself. 
  10.  Just breathe.
